2013-11-26 image-5Men love statistics. Whether it’s how well their favorite team is doing or how much they can bench press – it’s all about the numbers.

So to wrap up ‘Movember’ where we’ve learned all about important men’s health issues – prostate and testicular cancer, and mental issues – this final edition focuses on numbers for men to focus on. Their health numbers and a top 10 list of tips.

Men can drastically reduce their risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and many types of cancer by keeping track of these numbers:

  • Body Mass Index
  • Weight
  • Blood Pressure
  • HDL Cholesterol
  • LDL Cholesterol
  • Blood Glucose

Besides keeping those health numbers in check, here are 10 tips for men to live a healthier life:

  1. Know Your Family Health History – Family history is one of the most important tools to understanding your health.
  2. Get Moving  – Try to do some sort of physical activity between 20-30 minutes per day.
  3. Don’t Smoke – Tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of disease, disability and death in the U.S.
  4. Take Action Early – If you think you have a health issue, see a doctor right away.
  5. Sleep Well – A regular pattern of sleep improves metabolism and weight, and lowers stress.
  6. Manage Stress – Managing stress is essential to your health and well-being.
  7. Eat a Healthy Diet – Eat more fruits, vegetables and healthy proteins, while reducing foods high in sugar and salt.
  8. Stay at a Healthy Weight  – Know your Body Mass Index (BMI) which is an important factor in reducing chronic disease, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, stroke and cancer.
  9. Stay Mentally Healthy – Being down for a short period is one thing, but depression and other mental health issues are real illnesses that need medical attention.
  10. Drink Alcohol in Moderation – Two drinks per day – but no more than that – can be part of a healthy balanced diet.

Keeping these numbers at the forefront of men’s lives can improve their health and wellness. Now if they could just remember their anniversary date, they’d be all set.
